Group Underwriters Agency, Inc. is a family-owned and family-run insurance brokerage. Licensed in more than 30 states, we have operated out of our hometown of Charlottesville, Virginia, since our inception in 1969.

In late January of 1969, Charlie and Ann Long founded Group Underwriters Agency, Inc. in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Charlie’s love for newsprint led them to become the primary insurer of family-owned newspapers, first in Charlottesville and eventually in all of Virginia. Along the way, he developed an in-depth knowledge of media liability insurance and became known as a specialist. Soon, Group Underwriters was one of the top five media insurance agencies in the United States, in addition to being a family-owned, family-friendly staple business in the Charlottesville community.
Charlie and Ann’s son Farrell joined the firm in 1994. Like his father, he had a down-to-earth attitude about insurance and a thirst for knowledge. He achieved the Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) designation and, later on, the highly specialized Certified Risk Manager (CRM) designation. The agency flourished as Charlie continued managing client relationships and Farrell developed his expertise in commercial insurance and the day-to-day operations of the business.
Farrell took on more and more responsibility over time, eventually overseeing the acquisition of four other agencies as the company continued to grow. Charlie passed away in 2018. By this time, Farrell had become a capable leader and proudly carried on his father’s legacy.
In 2022, Group Underwriters Agency was acquired by ICS Financial, another family-owned Virginia business.
While they have seen many changes, including a transformed newsprint industry, the Long family still runs the agency out of the Charlottesville offices, they are still experts in many types of insurance, and they are still at heart the same business they were in 1969—an insurance agency where everyone is treated like part of the family.
